The study behind the claim is Parr and colleagues, published in PLoS ONE in 2014. Eight physically active men completed a randomized crossover trial after a hard training session, with myofibrillar protein synthesis measured across the 2 to 8 hour recovery window.
When the men drank alcohol alongside protein, synthesis fell 24% compared to protein alone. When they drank alcohol with carbohydrate instead, it fell 37%.
Those are real numbers from a real human trial, and also the most misused numbers in fitness content.
Why The Dose Changes Everything
The alcohol dose was 1.5 grams per kilogram of body mass. For an 80 kilogram man, that works out to roughly 12 standard drinks in one sitting.
That is a genuine binge, consumed over three hours starting an hour after training. It is not a study about having two beers with dinner.
Anyone citing that 37% figure to describe a couple of drinks is stretching the research well past what it measured.
The honest position: we do not have good human data on what two or three drinks does to muscle protein synthesis. The effect is almost certainly much smaller, but nobody has run that trial properly.
One finding is directly useful. Protein alongside alcohol blunted the damage without erasing it, and clearly beat drinking on carbohydrate alone. If you are drinking after training, eat a real meal with protein in it first.

Välimäki and colleagues gave eight healthy men a single 1.75 gram per kilogram dose of ethanol and tracked their hormones for two days.
Cortisol was clearly elevated four hours after drinking started. Testosterone hit its maximum decrease at 12 hours, and both were still shifted close to the 24 hour mark.
The timing is the interesting part. The hormonal cost of Saturday night is still being paid on Sunday.
Glycogen Refilling
Burke and colleagues gave trained cyclists the same 1.5 gram per kilogram dose after glycogen-depleting exercise.
Eight hours later, muscle glycogen sat at 24.4 mmol per kilogram in the alcohol condition versus 44.6 in the control. At 24 hours the gap had narrowed to 68 versus 82.
Here is the nuance almost every blog leaves out. The researchers concluded the effect was mainly indirect, caused by alcohol calories displacing carbohydrate from the recovery diet rather than a unique metabolic block.
Eat properly and you recover most of that deficit. That is a less dramatic story than “alcohol poisons your recovery,” and it is the one the data supports.
Sleep

Now the context no competing article gives you. The subjects were male Swiss mice, fed a liquid diet containing 5% ethanol continuously for up to 28 days, with creatine added at 1% of the solution.
